First off, the long awaited “Benny Tetteh-Lartey & The Afro-Scot Beat” which is tomorrow (Saturday 19th) night. 7-10pm at the Bongo Club. Should be a good gig although not as much fun as I thought it was going to be. We’re basically all playing Benny’s songs and there isn’t much room for being inventive and Benny’s playing the two most fun tracks on bass himself! But hey, it’s a gig. And through Benny, I’ve met Sylvain, who’s asked me to join his band Kernel.
Which leads me to my next tomorrow, Kernel’s debut gig at a fundraising do at Old St Paul’s Church, 11am-3pm. We’ve got a couple of gigs coming up in the Bongo Club too, more on those later.
Playing with Sylvain’s been a great experience so far. Hard work though, it’s made me notice how out of practise I’ve got (or, I never used to be that good!). Some of the tunes can be pretty long and require considerable stamina to keep them going with a good groove.
There’s also some talk of playing with Roger, (aka The Bluesfarther) at the next Blue Wednesday with a little duo. We miss Nick (see his myspace page for blogs of his adventures in India) but it should be a good laugh.
Better get back to work now…
